Explanation / Answer

The most important lesson that I learned was the change of leadership styles shown by Manuel Noriega at various phases of hos evolution and career.

Initially, he cared for people and showed skills to a group and motivate people for his cause. Later on, he really became brutal and corrupted due to excessive power.

To summarize and to borrow from the leadership texts, following are the leadership styles he showed over a period of his lifetime:

There are many leadership styles that admired business leader use and develop over a period of time. Some of these leadership styles are discussed briefly as under. I strongly agree that leaders should take different approaches to leadership based on the situation and should be flexible in using them across situations. It should be a mix of all the leadership styles that are discussed below and a leader must exercise her/his wisdom to use them.

Charismatic Leadership

Charismatic leadership is the modern leadership phenomenon wherein the leaders use their personal qualities such as their charm to make followers and to win their loyalty. They may use their charm in multiple ways like showing their humane side, portraying a strong and aspirational character, vowing to change things dramatically, etc. They show a lot of concern for their followers and try to motivate them to achieve results by going beyond their call of duty. They may lead by example in doing things. For example, Sir Richard Branson, founder of Virgin Group, leads his team by example and is an epitome of a charismatic leader.

Participative Leadership

This kind of leadership is associated with leading the organization and team in a corporate set-up. This variety of leaders do not dictate terms but discuss each and every issue with their team members to arrive at a decision. They will facilitate the idea of information sharing, brainstorming, and scenario planning to achieve the corporate objectives. Leaders of many new age tech-startups engage in this kind of leadership to develop new solutions and ideas for the market.

Situational Leadership

In situational leadership, the leader follows the situation (crisis, success, acquisitions, etc.) to guide the team. His ability to take the decision is based on his follower’s capabilities and overall reading and assessment of the situation. This comes handy during Merger & Acquisitions strategy, new product launches, long-term strategic choices, etc. The leader’s adaptability and assessment of a situation is a key skill in this kind of leadership.

Transactional Leadership

In this kind of leadership, a hierarchical leadership is followed by the leader, wherein the leader will motivate his team members to attain a certain objective and then offering rewards and stick based on the performance on stated objectives. This kind of leadership style exists in Japanese manufacturing companies where everyone is expected to follow the guidelines and do their part with maximum efficiency.
