Explanation / Answer
How can you get employees excited about assuming additional responsibilities?
Giving financial incentives since most employees are financial motivated. The most effective way is to offer them the opportunity to earn more money either immediately or through promotions in the future.
If you were to notice employee morale dropping in your department, how would you respond?
To deal with morale issues you must first find the source and take steps to make sure it does not creep back in. Throwing a pizza party may raise morale for a day, but it does not address the issues. No type of “feel good” activity will solve this problem.
When morale is low employees may not express it but they are waiting on management to solve the problem. I listed the first cause of low morale as poor leadership. Too often managers are disconnected from their employees or do not give them the affirmation that they need.
Remember morale is an emotional issue. Employees need to know their work is appreciated. They want to have the sense that they belong, that they are respected and have the respect of their peers and management.
The best motivator is to make people feel that they are a valuable and worthy person and a valuable and worthy member of the team.
How would you handle two employees whose friendship had turned negative?
Each need a documented private counseling talk where you provide clear guidelines - you do not have to like each other but you must function in a civil and effective manner not inhibiting the business.
You never give your employees gifts, but one of your employees always gives you gifts for holidays, birthdays, and Boss’s Day. Is it wrong for you to accept these gifts?
No, it's not wrong to accept them, but if it makes you uncomfortable you should let them know that from now on, cards only for birthdays or occasions--make it a policy so no one feels singled out. And you should also reciprocate with cards for your employees' birthdays and Administrative Professionals Day, or Christmas. It is not appropriate for you to commemorate things like Hallowe'en, Valentine's Day or Mother's/Father's Days.
Gifts from employees are one of the perks of being a boss--but you don't have to permit gift-giving if you don't feel comfortable accepting them. And if you institute any polices about this practice in the office, make sure the rules apply to everyone, and are fairly written--for instance, if people who are Christian want to exchange Christmas gifts--fine - but if you have Jewish or Muslim employees, they should not be forced to participate and they should also not be left out of their holiday celebrations.
What is the best method of dealing with an ethical decision regarding the performance of an employee
Tactfully. I usually encourage them and tell them how to strengthen their weak points. Make criticism constructive, not just outright criticism.
