Question

With these skills in mind, you encounter this real-life situation at your place of employment. There is a new UNIX sysadmin on your team. They are working in the Test/Development environment. They are not working in the production environment. They are testing a new piece of software that the management team has purchased and wants to implement into production next week. The testing does not go well and several problems arise concerning permissions, performance and security. You are able to rectify those problems in about 8 hours but management states that they do not want the new team member anywhere near the production environment in the following week. The new team member becomes frustrated, discouraged and states that they are concerned about losing their job over this event.

A)   How would you handle this situation? Write a short paragraph about your analysis and immediate response about this situation.

B)   Research one of the three plans below:

Develop one short plan (Plan 1, 2 or 3) based upon this research and the description given:

Plan 1) A communications plan to the change board and management on how the installation of the new software will be handled and what the risks are to the production environment.

Plan 2) An implementation plan on when and how the software will be quality assurance tested and approved to be installed in production.

Plan 3) A remediation and training plan for the new employee so that they will regain their confidence and restore their reputation with the management team.

This plan should be submitted in this word document and be approximately 1-2 pages in length and include at least three references, one of which can be your textbook.

Explanation / Answer

I will first talk to the management and explain to them that things are under control again and make sure they stay calm. I will calm my colleague down and make him realize that mistakes are bound to happened wherever he works and it is important for him to learn from them instead of feeling disrespected. I will explain to him that something like this does not get you fired but is in fact a very important learning experience.

A remedial and training plan for new employees makes the situation much better and easier to handle because new employees are bound to make mistakes in a new workplace, regardless of its severity. This will help the new employee to start working as a team and get to know each other and other employees much better. Ths way, they can regain their confidence. Through this training plan, gaining back reputation is not that big a task.
