Question
Compose an essay to address the elements listed below.
Identify the components of an information system (IS) using the five-component framework, and provide a brief summary of each.
Explain Porter’s five forces model.
Management IS (MIS) incorporate software and hardware technologies to provide useful information for decision-making.
Explain each of the following IS, and use at least one example in each to support your discussion: a collaboration information system, a database management system, a content management system, a knowledge management/expert system, a customer relationship management system, an enterprise resource planning system, a social media IS, a business intelligence/decision support system, and an enterprise IS.
Identify and discuss one technical and one human safeguard to protect against IS security threats. There are several processes that can be used to develop IS and applications such as systems development life cycle (SDLC) and scrum (agile development). Provide a brief description of SDLC and scrum, and then discuss at least one similarity and one difference between SDLC and scrum Sum up your paper by discussing the importance of MIS.
Explanation / Answer
The five essential components of IS are hardware, software, data, procedures/ network and peope.
Hardware refers to input output devices basically the machinery, processor, operating system and media devices.
Software refers to various programmes and the procedures/ manuals that supports hardware. Programes are generally stored in some input/ output medium, often a disk/ tape.
Data are facts that are used by programs to produce useful information, rather database as we can say consists of various programs and procedures.
Network/ Procedures are to people what software is to hardware - basically is consists of communication media, hubs and network devices
People consists of device operators, network administrators and system specialists.
PORTERS FIVE FORCES MODEL
The Porters Five forces model, helps to explain why different industries are able to susbstain different levels of profitability. The forces are frequently used to measure competition intensity, attractiveness and profitability of an industry or market. These forces are
Threat of new entrants - Profitable industries attract new entrants which eventually will decrease profitability of other firms in industry. The following factors can have effect on how much a threat new entrants may pose 1. Capital requirements 2. Absolute cost 3. Network effect 4. Access to distribution channels atc
Bargaining power of consumers - This refers to the ability customers have to drive the prices down. Bargaining power can also be described as market outputs, and firms can reduce buyers power. It is high when buyers have many alternatives and buyers power is low if they have few choices. Factors .1 Buyers information availability, 2. buyers price sensitivity, 3. differential advantage of industry products
Bargaining power of suppliers - This force addresses how easily suppliers can drive up price of goods and services. The key suppliers to the firm such as labour, raw material, and services to the firm can be a source of power over the firm when there are few substitues. Potential factors are 1. Presence of substitue inputs 2. Strength of distribution channels 3. impact of inputs on cost and differentiation
Threath of substitutes - Products from competitiors that can be used as sustitues in place of company's products pose a threath, example of substitues are coke and pepsi, landline and cellular telephones etc. Potential factors : 1. Buyers switching cost, 2. Ease of substitution, 3. Availability of close substitutes
Industry rivarly refers to the number of compititors and their ability to threathen the company, a business must be aware of its compitiors policies and also be reactive to the changes in industry . Potential factors are 1. Level of advertising expense 2. Firm concentration ratio 3. power of competative strategy
Understanding Porter's five forces enables a company to optimise its resources and gives better returns to its investors
Collaboration information system : It means a group of people working together for a specific goal. Collaboration includes giving feedback, improving process and procedures and performace of those involved. Collaboration is essential as a decision making tool, problem solving and managing project tool
a database management system provides users and programmers with a systemactic way to create, retrieve, update and manage data.It perhaps is most useful for providing a centralized veiw of data that can be accessed by multiple users from multiple locations.
Content management system it helps to engage your audience with faster and personalised experiences by increasing effenciency in creating managing delivering content over one or more digital channels
Knowledge management system refers to range of practices used organisation to enable adoption of insight, identify, create such insights and experience comprise of knowledge either embodied in individuals of process and procedures of firm.
customer relationship management system helps companies to stay connected with customers, streamlining processes and improve profitiability and it is basically a strategy of monetering customers
enterprise resource planning system is intgrated management of core business process like distribution, time and projects , finance, purchasing and manufacturing
a social media IS helps to share content among networks with users example television adversiment and the social media sites
a business intelligence/decision support system helps in making decisions working and analysing data that can generate stastical projects and data models. This system helps in improving quality of management decision, helps to solve problems while using external data
enterprise system is a process which improves functions of a business enterprise
technical and human safeguard to protect against IS
hardware and software - can be protected by firewalls, application designs and encryption
data can be protected by passwords, back up and recovery and physical security
procedures and people that is human safeguard can be obtained by hireing, training, education , compliance assessment
SDLC is a term used i system enginerring and and software enginerring to describe process fro planning creating testing and deploying information system
scrum (Agile development) this method breaks the product into small incremental builts with focus on customer adability and satisfaction
difference between SDLC and agile development - the major differen
