Question
Go to one of the following news sources and find a news story that is interesting to you:
Al Jazeera, BBC, Christian Science Monitor, CNN, Economist, Fox News, Guardian, Huffington Post, National Review, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, or the Washington Post.
Then, find coverage of the SAME news story in TWO MORE media sources from the same list. At least one of the sources should be new to you, and you should try, if you can, to find sources that come from different ideological perspectives. Include the title, author, newspaper/ website and URL for all three articles.
In 1-2 paragraphs, compare and contrast these three sources, in terms of how they report on this story. What information and perspectives are emphasized and minimized in each story? What can you learn from differences in headlines and accompanying photos (if there are any)? What can you gain by consulting multiple sources, rather than relying on just one of these sources?
Write (around 2 pages) long essay.
Explanation / Answer
An incident took place in 23rd July night at Toronto where in open fire number of peoples got injured. This news was compared in between various news sources
BBC NEWS: - This news channel provided the news based on the tweet of Toronto police official. After that their reported carried the update regarding the incident. So at first they updated with Headline “Nine people shot in Toronto, gunman dead”.
Later they provided the update with headline “One dead as 15 people shot in Toronto” In detail they mentioned that the one young girl killed and 13 other injured in this incident as per Canadian police detail.
CNN News: - Sheena Jones, Anneclaire and Madison Park reported the incident and further updated the headline where they mentioned in headline “ At least 9 people shot in Toronto and shooter is dead police say” They also mentioned police reference to support the incident. Later in headlines” At least 14 people shot in Toronto and shooter is dead, police say
The New York Times:- News was reported and updated by Sarah Mervosh, Jason Bailey where in headline they mentioned “9 People Injured in Toronto Shooting and Suspect Is Dead, Police Say” and later they later updated with headline “One Dead and 13 Injured in Toronto Shooting, Police Say”
In comparison of above three mentioned news sources there was similarity in between first news report later they updated the news as per their sources and found the gap in between their headlines. It may because of time they published the news. As per my research the BBC news channel published the news first and The new York times published the news later. So BBC news was based on assumption and The New York Times news was more confirmed based on police reference. In the BBC news headline there was no reference. CNN News and The New York times mentioned the police reference in their headline to confirm the data. I found that the news paper who mentioned the reference are more reliable and sure about their news but not on basis of their own research so they carried the reference in their news headlines. So it is important that the news should be on time as per BBC news and with references and facts given by The New York Times and CNN news. Consulting with 2 or more news sources help us get updated in more confirmed manner with data and references.
