Moderating Role of Openness to Experience This study examined the relationship among Big Five Personality traits and self-esteem of college students from various departments of the University of Sargodha in Pakistan. Gender differences were also focus of interest. The sample included an equal representation of 120 men and 120 women (total 240); their education level was MPhil and PhD. The mean age of the participants was 22.3 (ranging from20 to 30 years old) and standard deviation of 26.5 years. To conduct the study, the Big Five Personality Trait Scale (Srivastava, 1999) and Self-esteem Scale (Rosenberg, 1965) were used. The elements used by the researchers to support their study were the following: Correlation Matrix, Regression Analysis, Moderation Analysis, and T-test. According to the researchers from the Departments of Psychology and Sociology at the University of Sargodha, Pakistan, Niazi and Mehmood (2017), “the results of present study indicated significant correlation among extroversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, openness to experience and neuroticism" (p. 113). The constructs of the study were measured through psychometrically sound self-report measures. It is interesting to note that the findings of this study showed that students who were organized, motivational, and sensation seekers, are naturally curious, exciting, and imaginative. The researchers emphasized, however, that anxious students didn’t have these skills. The results also concluded that anxious students with high level of openness have positive self-evaluation, whereas neurotic students who showed less active imagination were not attentive to inner feelings. The results also showed that students that had positive personality traits also had high level of self-esteem. I was not surprised by these findings. This finding is definitely true as students are people with openness in there behaviour are usually positive and have better understanding of the society as well as they also integrate into the society in a better way. Organised motivational and curious people are usually innovators who find new ways to tackle the problems as well as to implement thinking into the new ways of operation. Their imagination is not limited to any specific limit but they are the solution provider for many innovative problems which can only be thought and discussed by these open thinkers. Neurotic students are basically reflection of their own personality and they don't so much excitement or innovative thinking in available situations.
All in all we can say that behaviour of individuals are a direct reflection of their availability of Thinking procedures as well as their ability to understand the situation and assess accordingly. Openness and better involvement in the society directly reflects that an individual has high rate of adoption as well as problem rectification ability which could be used for betterment of the society as well as the workplace.
