“Encouraging Students to Disagree with the Professor”

From my experience, most students of National Cheng Kung University are afraid to challenge and disagree the professor with their own opinion. Most of them remain silence in order to avoid offensive which may cause them into trouble—picked on or failed by professor. Beside from students, some of the professors also have this kind of problem, they aren’t willing to accept student’s opinion or patiently listen to what they represented. Consequently, students are impelled to become more and more timid, staid or partisan. Consider National Cheng Kung University as a world class university, I think that such phenomenon is detrimental to the whole education system.

In my opinion, this common practice must be improving. As a student, we must always have an independent mind and courage to challenge others’ opinion wherever it comes from our peer group or the professor. Nothing is absolute, the way the professor and student think are surely in different, maybe some of the opinions aren’t so correct, yet it might establish while in different perspective and conditions. Encouraging disagreement is essential to a healthy education system as it encourages us to think like a professional. Not only the student can gain their knowledge, but so do the professor.

Answer: Education is a process of continuous learning for both the seeker and giver of knowledge. The learning is enhanced, when it becomes an interactive process, which involves free exchange of ideas. If the students are dissuaded from presenting counter view points or disagree with the professor, then both the students and the professor miss the chance to gain from the whole process. Students have a natural inquisitive mind, and they question the accepted theory. Also it is important for education and knowledge to evolve, which happens when established theories and notions are question. Criticism and review of the established ideas is necessary for new ideas to generate. Over a period of time, old ideas and concepts tend to become irrelevant and need to be reviewed, questioned and changed with new contemporary ideas and concepts. Professors need to see the students as a source of feedback and they should rather encourage students to freely discuss their ideas, particularly the contrarian view points, which help all to explore the usually forbidden areas. It leads to new discoveries and inventions. We have known that inventions and discoveries have been done by people who question the accepted theories. So disagreement to a professor should not be a taboo and professors should feel at ease and rather encourage students to add value to the process of education and learning by discussing their view points and ideas freely, without any fear of being reprimanded and punished directly or indirectly.
