Question

The Oxford Copy Shop and Typing Pool is a local copy shop that produces course packets. Professors take copies of handout and other course-related materials to the Copy Shop, which duplicates them and sells them to students. The jobs are due at the end of the day on the Due Dates that are provided. It is now the beginning of Day 6 and the store has the following jobs on hand:

You are asked to schedule and evaluate several sequencing rules.   You are ready to schedule these six jobs. They are all ready to be processed.

a) Determine the sequence of jobs using the following rules:

Critical ratio rule (CR) – using the definition of the critical ratio rule that we used on our assignment

Longest Processing Time (LPT)

b) Prioritize the rules used in a) based on average flow time measured from now.

c) Prioritize the rules used in a) based on average lateness with no credit for completing any test early (in other words, the late time would be set at zero if a job is early).

d) Prioritize the rules used in a) based on average early time with no penalty for completing any test late (in other words, the early time would be set at zero if a job is late).

Explanation / Answer

Critical ratio rule = time remaining / work days remaining

Job wise critical ratio:

i) BA 426

Remaining time = 9 days

Workdays remaining = 4 days

Critical ratio= 9/4

= 2.25

ii) MGT 302

Remaining time = 4 days

Workdays remaining = 2 days

Critical ratio= 4/2

= 2

iii) MKT 291

Remaining time = 9 days

Workdays remaining = 8 days

Critical ratio= 9/8

= 1.125

iv) ACC 321

Remaining time = 17 days

Workdays remaining = 6 days

Critical ratio= 17/6

= 2.83

v) MIS 235

Remaining time = 15 days

Workdays remaining = 7 days

Critical ratio= 15/7

= 2.14

The priority order of job is performed from smaller to larger value of critical value.therefore sequence of job is

MKT 291 -> MGT 302 -> MIS 235 -> BA 426 -> ACC 321

Based on Longest processing time

Sequence of job is

MKT 291 -> MIS 235 -> ACC 321 -> BA 426 -> MGT 302

b) On the basis of above table, Comparison of Rule based on average flow:

CR = 16.6

LPT = 19.2

CR will have higher priority

c) On the basis of above table,Comparison of Rule based on average Lateness:

CR = 5.8

LPT = 8.4

CR will have higher priority

CR Proc. time Flow time Time to Due Lateness (Flow Time- Due date) MKT 291 8 8 9 -1 MGT 302 2 10 (8+ 2) 4 6 MIS 235 7 17 (10 +7) 15 2 BA 426 4 21 9 12 ACC 321 6 27 17 10 Total 27 83 54 29 Mean 16.6 5.8
