Question

What is the density of liquid if radius of capillary filled with this liquid is equal 1 mm, the liquid elevation in the capillary is 25 mm, the surface tension is 60.3 mN/m, the cos theta is equal 1. The volatile liquids exhibit (more than one true answer possible): strong intermolecular attraction forces weak intermolecular attraction forces low boiling point; high boiling point Partition coefficient between ether and water for some medicine is equal 14.1. At the beginning of experiment the water layer contains 1.5 times 10^3 mol L^-1 of medicine. What is the concentration of this solute in organic layer at equilibrium?

Explanation / Answer

6) We know that surface Tension T = dgrh/2cos       where d = density of the liquid

                                                 d = 2Tcos/grh

          Given that Surface tension T = 60.3 mN/m = 60.3 x 10-3 N/m

                              radius r = 1 mm = 0.001 m

                         height of liquid h = 25 mm = 0.025 m

                        cos = 1

                      acceleration due to gravity g = 9.8 m/s2

                         density of the liquid , d = ?

Hence,

density of the liquid , d = 2Tcos/grh

                                  = 2 x 60.3 x 10-3 N/m x 1 / [ 9.8 m/s2 x 0.001 m x 0.025 m]

                                 = 492 kg/m3

                                 = 0.492 g/cm3

Therefore,

density of the liquid = 0.492 g/cm3
