On analysis, an equilibrium mixture for the reaction 2H_2S(g) rightarrow 2H_2(g) + S_2(g) was found to contain 1.0 mol H_2S, 4.0 mol H_2, and 0.80 mol S_2 in a 4.0 L vessel. Calculate the equilibrium constant, K_c, of this reaction. Calculate K_p for the reaction 2NOCl(g) rightarrow 2NO(g) + Cl_2(g) at 400 degree C if K_c at 400 degree C for this reaction is 2.1 times 10^-2.Explanation / Answer
1) 2H2S (g) <--> 2H2 ( g) + S2 (g)
at equilibrium [H2S] = moles / volume = 1/4 = 0.25
[H2] = 4/4 = 1M , [S2] = 0.8/4 = 0.2 M
Kc = [H2]^2 [S2] / [H2S]^2
Kc = ( 1^2) x ( 0.2) / ( 0.25^2)
= 3.2
2) 2NOCl (g) <---> 2NO (g) + Cl2 (g)
Kp = Kc (RT)^dn
where dn = number of products in gas phase - number of reactanats in gas phase = 3-2 = 1
R = gas constant = 0.08206 liter atm/molK , T = 400C = 400 + 273 = 673 K
Kp = 2.1 x 10^-2 ( 0.08206 x 673)^1
= 1.16
