Question
An average human male contains about 15% of his body mass as triacylglycerols stored in adipose tissue. Answer the following questions for a human male with a total body mass of 90 kg (-200 lbs). a. Adipose tissue provides 37 kJ/gram in energy (via fatty acid oxidation). What is the total energy content of the adipose tissue of the individual described above? b. Hydrated glycogen provides 6 kJ/gram of energy (via oxidation of glucose). For the individual described above, what would be his total body mass if the energy content calculated in part (a) was stored as hydrated glycogen rather than as adipose tissue? If both contain the same number of carbon atoms, which will provide more energy upon combustion on a per mole basis (i.e., energy released by complete oxidation to carbon dioxide and water in kJ/mol), a saturated fatty acid or an unsaturated fatty acid? Explain using butanoic acid and 2-butenoic acid as examples. In naturally-occurring unsaturated fatty acids, the C=C double bond usually has the cis-configuration. If a monounsaturated fatty acid has a trans-configuration about its C=C bond, should its melting point be more similar to an saturated fatty acid or a cis-monounsaturated fatty acid with the same number of carbon atoms? Explain. As with amino acids and peptides, various classes of saponifiable lipids can often be separated by electrophoresis.Explanation / Answer
SOLUTION:
Q1. (a) HINT: Calculate the total grams adipose tissue, then determine the energy available from it.
Total adipose tissue = 15% of body weight = 90 X (15/100) = 13.5 Kg = 13500g
Energy stored in 1g of adipose tissue = 37KJ
Therefore total energy content of adipose tissue = 37 X 13500 = 499500KJ
(B) Energy content of hydrated glycogen = 6KJ/gram
Mass required to store 499500KJ = 499500 / 6 = 83250g = 83.250Kg
Mass of the individual must be = Mass of hydrated glycogen + rest body mass
From part (a) body mass without adipose tissue = 90 - 13.5 = 76.5
Therefore total body mass if hydrated glycogen is used in place of adipose tissue = 76.5 + 83.25 = 159.75Kg
