Ceramics are brittle materials exhibiting high melting point. Oxides or carbides of metals are known as ceramics.They are more heat and corrosion resistant than metals.
Ceramic materials are held together by a chemical bond( ionic or sometimes covalent bond). For metals, the chemical bond is called the metallic bond. The bonding of atoms together is much stronger in covalent and ionic bonding in comparison to metallic bonds. Thus explaining why ceramics have high melting point and are brittle than metals or plastic.
The differences are listed below
1. Metals are ductile whereas ceramics are not.
2. Metals and plastics have lower electrical resistivity than ceramics.
3. Metals are made of metallic elements, or compounds, alloys or mixtures of metallic elements with other materials; whereas ceramics are mixtures of glass, essentially and other materials.
