1a. Botulinum toxin is a poison produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. Botulinum toxin interferes with the function of the proteins facilitating exocytosis. 1b. How would that influence the ability of the neuron to signal the muscle -Botulinum toxin is a poison produced by the bacterium, Clostridium botulinum. Botulinum toxin interferes with the function of the proteins facilitating exocytosis. How will this influence the amount of acetylcholine in the extracellular fluid? -How would that influence the ability of the neuron to signal to the muscle?

Explanation / Answer

Botulinum toxin released by bacteria Clostridium botulinum prevents the release of neurotransmitter acetylcholine from neuron.

Acetylcholine helps in the transfer of signal from motor neuron of nervous system to muscle cells to faciliate exocytosis. Hence when botulinum toxin prevents the release of neurotransmitter acetylcholine, neuron is no more able to signal the muscle cells for exocytosis.
