Question

Answer the following questions. (a) The half cell containing Bi/Bi^3+ is the (b) Which one of the following statements is TRUE for the half cell containing Bi and Bi^3+. Bi^3+ will be reduced to form Bi. Bi will be oxidized to form Bi^3+. Bi^3+ will be oxidized to form Bi. Bi will be reduced to form Bi^3+. (c) The half cell containing Cd^2+/Cd is the (d) Which one of the following statements is TRUE for the half cell containing Cd and Cd^2+. Cd^2+ will be oxidized to form Cd. Cd will be reduced to form Cd^2+. Cd will be oxidized to form Cd^2+. Cd^2+ will be reduced to form Cd.

Explanation / Answer

If EOcell is positive then reaction is spontaneous or in other words cell will work.

Eocell = E0cathode - E0anode

The cell reaction may be-

3Cd + 2Bi3+ ------------> 3Cd2+ + 2Bi

Half cell rection reactions are

3Cd ---------> 3Cd2+ + 6e-   (Anode)

2Bi3+ + 6e-  ----------> 2Bi (Cathode)

E0cell = 0.308 - (-0.403) =0.711V

Since E0cell is positive , so cell reaction is correct.

(a)Bi/Bi+3 is cathode .

(b) From above it is clear that Bi+3 is reduced to Bi.

(c)Cd+2/Cd is cathode.

(d) From above it is clear that Cd will be oxidised to from Cd+2.
