Question

Consider a hypothetical reaction in which A and B are reactants and C and D are products. If 11 grams of A completely reacts with 25 grams of B to produce 14 grams of C, how many grams of D will be produced?

A 3.4 gram sample of sodium hydrogen carbonate is added to a solution of acetic acid weighing 10.7 grams. The two substances react, releasing carbon dioxide gas to the atmosphere. After the reaction, the contents of the reaction vessel weighs 11.9 grams. What is the mass of carbon dioxide released during the reaction?

Explanation / Answer

1)

mass is conserved in a reaction

so,

mass of reactants = mass of product

that is,

mass of A + mass of B = mass of C + mass of D

11 + 25 = 14 + mass of D

mass of D = 22 g

Answer: 22 g

2)

CO2 is gas and will escape of the solution

mass of CO2 = decrease in mass of solution

= initial mass - final mass

= (3.4 + 10.7) - (11.9)

= 2.2 g

Answer: 2.2 g
