Introduction Solutions of iron (III) react with many of the members of the family of organic chemical compounds called phenols to produce intensely colored products. The interaction is between iron (III) and a hydroxyl group (-OH) bonded to a benzene ring. For instance the reaction between iron (III) and salicylic acid is used as a qualitative and quantitative test for the purity of aspirin. Aspirin is synthesized from salicylic acid, a phenol. Aspirin itself is not a phenol, however. When treated with iron (II), pure aspirin should not produce a color. If unreacted salicylic acid starting material is present, however, then the aspirin sample will produce a purple color when treated with iron (III, with the intensity of the purple color an index of the amount of unreacted salicylic aciod present. COOH COOH OH OH O-C-CH3 phenol salicylic acid acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin) In this experiment, the goal is to determine the stoichiometry of the reaction between iron (III) and the phenol known as 5-sulfosalicylic acid. This phenol is chosen because it is more soluble in water than phenol itself or salicylic acid COOH HSO3 OH 5-sulfosalicylic acid

Explanation / Answer

The huge difference coming durring the error analysis is due to the mistakes made in the calculations.

For eg there are huge errors in calculation of mole fraction

Also the expected value of density of iron which is 7.8 g/ml is of solid iron

and here we are talking about an extremely dilute solution of iron. So comparing these values for error analysis is wromng and hence such huge values of percentage analysis.
