Explanation / Answer

From what I understand, the protist group is generally designatedas a dumping ground for organisms that don't seem to fit anywhereelse. Other than living in water and having simple bodyorganizations, they don't appear to have much in common, whichexplains the diversity. I'm not sure if your teacher wants specific species or justspecific groups of protists, but the book mentions these three: Parasitic- Trichomonas vaginalis- a particularly nasty STD thatgrows in semi-acidic conditions. It has flagellum and amembrane and reproduces by binary fission. It can feed onepithelial cells. I would suggest looking in the index ofyour textbook for more information. Free-living- Brown algae- the largest and most complicated protistswe know of. They are multi-cellular and photosynthetic. Again, look in the textbook because I don't happen to have a copywith me. They are free-living because they don't requireother organisms to survive. Mutualistic- Dinoflagellates- these are photosynthetic organismsand primary producers. Dinoflagellates produce food for otherorganisms in the ocean. When food is scarce, they sometimesteam up with coral, which provide protection from outer elements inexchange for the photosynthetic nutrients that the dinoflagellatesprovide. This should get you started. Find out more about theseorganisms and you should have a good paper.
