Question
What is/are the major product(s) of the following reaction? What mechanism does it follow? (SN1, SN2, E1, E2)
Please show the work or reasoning behind your answer! I'm having trouble distinguising between each reaction depending on their leaving group, substrate etc.
Thank you in advance :)
Explanation / Answer
1.It is to be kept in mind that generally Substituion reactions are favoured at lower tempreature than Elimination reactions and as tempreature increases ,probability of elimination increases .
So nin the given question due to presence of polar protic solvent SN1 is preferred with formation of carbocation and methyl shift so best possibe answer is B.
2. Always remeber Hydrogenation is a syn addition (same side) and it will be opposite to orientation in which D is present.
Best possible answer is A because Hydrogen attack from bottom offers less hindrance than at the top
