86 PROP 332: Evaluation of the Gas Post-Laboratory Questions (Use the spaces provided for the answers and additiona (2) Wha 1. An evaluation of R was performed, following the procedure described in this module. The barometric pressure was 736 torr, the temperature was 295 K, and the volume of hydrogen gas collected was 35.6 mL. The calculated value of R was 82.1 mL atm K gas under the mol-1 1 How many grams of magnesium metal were used? gas law? answer (2) If the vapor pressure of water had not been taken into account, what would have been the calcu- lated value of R? 3. Sh rived fr answer (3) If the syringe volume had been incorrectlyExplanation / Answer
1.
1. We know that PV=nRT
So, n= PV/RT
Here given, P= 736torr = 0.9684 atm, V= 35.6mL, T= 295K, R= 82.1 mL atm K-1 mol-1
Putting all these values will get, n= (0.9684*35.6) / (82.1*295) mol
= 34.475 / 24219.5 mol
= 0.00142344 mol
= 1.42 * 10-3 mol
2. At 295K, vapour pressure of water 19.8torr= 0.026 atm
all the other values are same,
just putting in the equation, R= PV/nT
= (0.026*35.6)/ (0.00142344*295) mL atm K-1 mol-1
= 0.9256/ 0.4199148 mL atm K-1 mol-1
= 2.204 mL atm K-1 mol-1 (Ans)
