Question
(a)Methane: Methane is in gasseous state at room temperature. It is a colorless and odourless gas at room temperature.Methane also known as natural gas, has variety of applications.one such is-
(i) Methane is used as fuel for water heaters, automobiles, turbines etc. Methane combust with oxygen to release CO2 (Carbon dioxide), H2O(water steam) and heat 891kJ./mole at standard conditions.
(LNG: It is liquified natural gas which is ,as the name suggests, natural gas that is converted into liquid state. It is mainly done for the ease of storage and transportation of the natuaral gas.)
(b)Butane:Butane's boiling point is -1deg celsius, so it should be in gasseous state at room, however by applying pressure just over 2 atm it can be liquified at room temperature. Use of butane can be:
(i) It is used as a petrol component, as a feedstock for the production of base petrochemicals in steam cracking, as fuel for cigarette lighters and as a propellant in aerosol sprays such as deodorants.
(c)Propane: Propane is gas at room temperature, although it can also be liquified at room temperature by application of pressure thus it is also called as liquified petroleum gas.(LPG)Use of propane is-
(i) LPG is used in many households as fuel in kitchen. It is also used as an alternative fuel for the vehicles.
(d)Octane: Octane is liquid at room temperature.Use of octane is-
(i) Octane is one of the major component in gasoline which is used as fuel for automobiles and various machineries. Like other low molecular mass hydrocarbons it is also highly volatile and highly flammable.
