Question

1.What is “dialysis?”

2.Large quantities of water are used in dialysis. Explain the role of water and a semi-permeable membrane in dialysis. Use the terms: hypotonic, hypertonic , isotonic, and osmosis in your explanation

3.Describe the condition/s that require dialysis. What is the major cause?

4.Explain why a “healthy” individual does not require dialysis. What organs are involved?

5.What actions should individuals take to prevent conditions requiring dialysis (excepting those that are due to genetic issues)?

Explanation / Answer

1) Dialysis is a process for removing "waste" material and excess water from the blood. It is also known as a process artificially remove wastes from blood when the kdiney is failing.

2)

water is the main solution in which substances dilute or are in solutoin.

Since substance may remain in solution inside/outside the cell, we need to define

Hypotonic solutions --> any solution with lower osmotic pressure (i.e. concnetration)

isotonic solution --> has the same osmotic pressure as the outside solution (i.e. concnetration)

Hypertonic solution --> the solution is high in osmotic pressure vs. outside solution.

Osomosis is the process in which one solute will "naturally" through mass transfer processes and gradients, move from one place to an other,. In this case, from a cell to the outside of th ecell

3)

Dialysis is needed when kidney has failure or won't work 100%. It is needed since the patient needs to "clean" up all the substances and wastes the body generates

4)

Healthy individuals have functional kdineys. They will make the dialysis instead of the machine. The kidney can separate water and filter the wastes, later disposing them in the urine

5)

Avoid excess of alcohol driking

Increase natural water consumption

Decrease salt (Na+, K, CO3-2, etc,) consumption

Avoid high blood pressure

Get rid of kidney stones
