Question

When 12.50 g of finely divided brass (60% Cu, 40% Zn) at 100.0oC is quickly stirred into 50.00 g of water at 22.0oC in a calorimeter, the water temperature rises to 24.0oC. Find the specific heat of brass. The specific heat of water, c, is 4.184 J g-1 oC-1.

a.How much heat is gained by the water?

b. When the system loses heat, the surrounding gains the same amount of heat. How much heat was lost by the brass. What relation can you write relating qbrass to qwater?

c. What is the final temperature of the brass?

d. Calculate the specific heat of the brass.

Explanation / Answer

Heat lost By hot body = heat gained by cold body

MsT = MsT

12.5 x s brass x (100-24) = 50 x 4.184x(24-22)

sbrass = (50x4.184x2)/(76x12.5) = 0.44 J/goc

a)   heat gained by water = MsT =50 x 4.184x(24-22)

                                                  = 418.4 joules
