In a dry 250 mL conical flask, dissolve nickel(II) bromide trihydrate in n-butanol by heating the mixture on a steam bath. Filter the hot solution and add a hot solution of triphenylphosphine in n-butanol to the hot green filtrate. Allow the solution to cool to room temperature. Collect the dark green crystals by vacuum filtration, wash with small volumes of n-butanol and dry by suction.
