Question
Given that an aqueous solution of Co(H_2O)_6^2+ is pink and an aqueous solution of Co(NH_3)_6^2+ is blue, answer the following questions about an equilibrium system involving these cobalt(ll) ions. Co(H_2O)_6^2+(aq) + 6 NH_3(aq) Co(NH_3)_6^2+ (aq) + 2 H_2 O(l) Assume that you have a solution containing Co(H_2O)_6^2+ (aq). Predict what you should observe when NH_3(aq) is added to the solution. Explain why you made the prediction using concepts from LeChatelier's principle. Write the chemical formula of the substance that increased in amount as a result of adding NH_3(aq) to the Co(H_2O)_6^2+ solution. Write the formula of the substance that decreased in amount.Explanation / Answer
* Addition of NH3 to the aqueous solution shifts the equilibrium towards right side. that menas the colur of complex changes from blue to pink slowly.
* According to Le-Chatlier's principle increase in conc. of reactants or decrease in conc. of products shifts the equilbrium towards right side i.e. towards products side. Hence addition of NH3 one of the products shifts the equilibrium towards products side.
* Amount product i.e [Co(NH3)6]2+ increases and amount of reactant i.e [Co(H2O)6]2+ decreases.
