Question

What is the heat of reaction released or absorbed in trial 2?

These are my lab results for trial 2:

. I discarded that container and took a new one off the shelf. The mass was 18.600 g and the temperature was 21.5 degrees Celsius.

6. This time I added 50 mL of hydrochloric acid and .250 g of magnesium to the container.

7. The temperature was 43.2 degrees Celsius and the weight was 68.829 g.

The choices for answers for this question are -4560 J, 6450 J, 4760 J, -4760 J/. I guess I am working it wrong. I do not get any of these answers. Thanks for your help.

Explanation / Answer

dro in temperature = 43.2- 21.5 =21.7 deg,c, mass = 68.829-18.6 =50.229 gm

asuming specific heat = 4.184 J/gm.deg,c, heat of reaction = 50.229*4.184* 21.1 =4434 Joules. A is the closest answee.
