Question

An object of mass m = 4.85 kg, attached to a spring scale, rests on a frictionless, horizontal surface as in the figure below. The spring scale, attached to the front end of a reads zero when the car is at rest. Determine the acceleration of the car if the spring scale has a constant reading of 19.2 N when the car is in motion. What constant reading will the spring scale show if the car moves with constant velocity? Describe the forces on the object as observed by someone at rest outside the car.

Explanation / Answer

a) If we solve the problem from outside the car frame a pseudo force will be acting which will be equal to the reading of the spring scale.

So m*a=19.2

a=19.2/4.85

=3.958 m/s^2

b) It will show zero reading.

c)Gravition force on the block and normal force from the surface of the car.

d)Gravition force on the block and normal force from the surface of the car and a pseudo force which will act in the backward direction having the magnitude of the product of mass of the block and the acceleration of the car.
