Question

A body of mass 65g lies on a smooth horizontal table. A light inextensible string runs from this body, over a smooth pulley at the edge of the table, tp a body of mass 5g hanging freely. with the string taut, the system is released from rest.

1) draw a free body diagram of the entire sysytem identifying the forces that do not contribute to work on the system. justify your answer

2) state some misconception that students normally have in relation with this problem

3) describe how you would apply the work energy principle to determine the tension in the string

Explanation / Answer

generally reaction force and force which is perpendicular to its displacement does not contribute to work. Here 65g weight on the table will give to Normal force which will not contribute to work. Also T , tension force in the string does not do any work. Normal reaction at pulley, if any, do not do any work.

2. misconception is about identifying the forces and write equation of motion involving them.

3. work done by 65g mass = inrease in KE + loss in pe of 5g mass
