Question

Help with all parts please! Answer choices for part C are: 40% less 20% less Exactly the same 20% more 40% more Tarzan (mT 90.0 kg) is perched on a cliff 14.0m above Jane. Map do Answer the three questions below, using three significant figures Part A: What is the value of Tarzan's speed (vT) just as he gets down to Jane's level? Number m/s Part B. If Tarzan is actually moving at 10.5 m/s, what fraction (96-loss) of kinetic energy did he lose due to air resistance? Number %-loss- Part C: If Tarzan's mass were 40% greater, how would that affect the answer for Part A? His speed would be.. O O O 40% less 20% less exactly the same

Explanation / Answer

Part A : From energy conservation : mgh=(1/2)mv2

v=sqrt(2gh) = sqrt(2*9.8*14) = 16.565 m/s

Part B : actual velocity of Tarzan = 10.5 m/s

Actual kinetic energy of Tarzan due to air resistance= (1/2)*90*10.52 = 4961.25 Joules

Kinetic energy of Tarzan if there was no air resistance = (1/2)*90*16.5652 = 12348 Joules

Loss of kinetic energy = 12348*4961.25 = 7386.75 Joules

% loss of energy = (7386.75/12348)*100 = 59.82 %

Part C : The answer is third option "exactly the same" . This is because the calculated velocity [sqrt(2gh)] is independent of mass of Tarzan
