Question

Do you eat meat? If so, would you cat horse, dog, cat, rabbit, guinea pig or rat meat assuming that the animals had been raised under sanitary conditions? If not, why not? (These animals are all used as food sources in various cultures.) Some people use the term "other animals' instead of "animals." What reasons might they have for doing this? Assume you are a vegetarian. Is it ethical for you to eat a transgenic tomato that contains genes from cows? Explain What is the Frankenstein syndrome? Is genetic engineering morally wrong? If so, should it be stopped? If so, by whom? Suppose you are a farmer. On your farm there is a grove of oak trees, the trees are about 250 years in age. The grove occupies about one acre of land. You decide you want to increase the size of your tomato patch and will cut down the oak trees for firewood. The hear about your plans, and protesters chain themselves to some of your trees. You regard this as an invasion of your personal property-you have the right to do whatever you want with these trees because you own them and pay the property taxes. Discuss. Compare liberal and postoperative positions on gender equality. What accounts for the rapid increase in the number of female veterinarians? Is "ethical vegetarianism" an oxymoron? What is meant by the term "green pig"? Are you a student at a land grant institution? Is the land grant concept obsolete? Explain. Many universities are experiencing budgetary difficulties. One way of improving their financial situation is to form partnerships or arrangements with transnational corporations, such as the Cargill Higher education Initiative. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of this type of arrangement for the companies and for the university faculty and students. Discuss the contention of Davis (2001) that a vegan diet is unethical because it results in the death of large numbers of "animals of the field". If blind chickens are better and more efficient egg layers than normal chickens, do you think that the poultry industry, if left to follow efficiency and economics, would blind female chicks at hatching with a hot iron?

Explanation / Answer

Animals which are domisticated and hold aesthetic value to the humans depending on the cultural backgroud, are generally not cumsumed as food. Some of these animals are seen as an extension to the family members and are treated accordingly.

All other animals which are excluded from the above group are named as " other animals".

Being a vegetarian, transgenic tomato containing animal gene could pose a dilemma. Even though cow meat is not consumed in this situation, yet the genetic material which is the essence of a living organism can qualify as non-vegetarian product.
