Chapter 05, Problem 064 Your answer is partially correct. Try again. The figure shows a box of mass m2-1.0 kg on a frictionless plane inclined at angle -28° It is connected by a cord of negligible mass to a box of mass mi-2.7 kg on a horizontal frictionless surface. The pulley s frictionless and massless. (a) If the magnitude of the horizontal force is 4.0 N, what is the tension in the may have without the connecting cord becoming slack? connecting cord? (b) What is the largest value the magnitude of (a)N 679 (b) N

Explanation / Answer

Let tension be T, force equation on two blocks are:

T +F = m1a and m2g sin theta - T = m2a

adding the two equation,

F + m2g sin theta = (m2+m1)a

4 +1*9.8* sin 28 degree = (1+2.7) a

a = [4+1*9.8* sin 28 degree]/3.7 = 2.3245 m/s^2

T = m1a - F = 2.7*2.3245 - 4

T = 2.28 N answer

b] When string becomes slack, tension T = 0,

m2g sin theta - T = m2a

a = g sin theta = 9.8*sin 28 degree = 4.6 m/s^2

F = m1a = 2.7*4.6

= 12.42 N answer
