Question

A car is waiting at an intersection. When the traffic light turns green, the car starts moving. After some time the car comes to rest at another traffic light. The figure below shows the veloity of the car as a function of time 12 10 0 12 3 45 6789 10 11 12 t (s) One can clearly identify three different stages of this motion. What is the acceleration of the car during the second stage of the motion? Submit Answer Tries 0/1:2 What is the total distance travelled by the car between the two traffic lights? Explanation / Answer

a. Acceleration = dv / dt

= (7 - 9)/(6-3)

= 2/3 m/s2

b. Distance = v.dt = area under v-t curve.

= 1/2*3*9 + (1/2*3*2 + 3*7) + 1/2*5*7

= 55 m
