Question

An electron is a subatomic particle (m = 9.11 10-31 kg) that is subject to electric forces. An electron moving in the +x direction accelerates from an initial velocity of +4.91 105 m/s to a final velocity of +2.09 106 m/s while traveling a distance of 0.040 m. The electron's acceleration is due to two electric forces parallel to the x axis: 1 = +7.66 10-17 N, and 2, which points in the -x direction. Find the magnitudes of the net force acting on the electron and the electric force 2.
Fnet = _____________ N
F2 = _____________ N

Explanation / Answer

The initial velocity of the electron vi = 4.91*10^5 m/s The final velocity of the electron vf = 2.09*10^6 m/s the distance traveled d = 0.040m
from kinematics equation vf^2 = vi^2 + 2ad (20.9*10^5m/s)^2 - (4.91*10^5 m/s) = 2 a(0.040) then the acceleration    a = (20.9^2-4.91^2)*10^10 / 2(0.040) = 5158.77*10^10 m/s^2
Therefore the net force F = ma = (9.1*10^-31kg)(5.158*10^13m/s^2) = 46.94*10^-18 N
Now the net force is equal to    F = F1 + F2 4.694*10^-17 = 7.66*10^-17 + F2 Then F2 = -2.966*10^-17 N
