Question

A laser beam enters a 18.0 cm thick glass window at an angleof 38o (from the normal). The index of refraction of theglass is 1.44. At what angle from the normal does the beam travelthrough the glass? Use units of "deg".
and How long doesit take the beam to pass through theplate?

How long doesit take the beam to pass through theplate?

Explanation / Answer

Angle is the angle of refraction... use Snell's law: .     sin38 = 1.44sin          =  25.31 degrees . The distance the ray travels through the glass is found byusing a triangle (it travels down the hypotenuse) .    distance = 18 / cos25.31 =    19.9116 cm . and it travels at a speed of    c / n = 3.00 x 1010 cm/s / 1.44 =    2.08333 x 1010 cm/s . So the time is    distance / speed = 19.9116 cm / 2.08333 x 1010 cm/s = .              =    9.558 x 10-10 seconds  =   0.9558 ns
