Question

Consider the plan view of a one-story building with 12 inch concrete shear walls shown below. (a) Determine the shear forces in the shear walls resulting from a 60 kip earthquake in the N-S direction. (b) Determine the design seismic shear forces in the shear walls. (c) How would the distribution of the lateral load be changed if the lateral stiffness of the wall D were cut in half? 80 ft 5 ft 35ft 40 ft Wall B 10 ft Wall A+ 20 ft eMWall D 20 ft Wall C 40 ft of 40 ft 40 ft 60 kip Design Codes: ASCE7-2010

Explanation / Answer

In wall C = 30 x 40 = 1200kip

In WallB -= 30 x 40 = 1200 +(30x10) = 1500 kip

In wall A= 30 x10 = 300 kip

In wall D = 30 x40 =1200 kip

b) Sesmic Shear Force in Wall C= 1.4 x 1200 = 1680kip

   Sesmic Shear Force in Wall B = 1.4 x 1500 = 2100kip

Sesmic Shear Force in Wall A = 1.4 x 300 = 420kip

   Sesmic Shear Force in Wall D = 1.4 x 1200 =1680kip

c) If lateral stiffness is cut to half in wall D , the lateral load will be equally distributed in Wall C and Wall B.
