Question

I need help in answering this two part question. I answeredthe first part but the second part has got me stumped. Here theyare: Part 1 Consider a variant on the circuit. The water is pumped to highpressure, but the water then faces a fork in the pipe. Two pipeslead back to the pump: large pipe L and small pipe S. Since thewater can flow through either pipe, the pipes are said to be inparallel: (Part B figure) Theoverall flow of water that enters the system before the fork isequal to _____ Part 2 What can you say about the drop inpotential energy (per unit mass or volume) of water travelingthrough either pipe? The drop is greater for pipe L.
The drop is greater for pipe S.
The drop is the same for both pipes. What can you say about the drop inpotential energy (per unit mass or volume) of water travelingthrough either pipe? The drop is greater for pipe L.
The drop is greater for pipe S.
The drop is the same for both pipes. What can you say about the drop inpotential energy (per unit mass or volume) of water travelingthrough either pipe? The drop is greater for pipe L.

The drop is the same for both pipes.

Explanation / Answer

2)option C is correct.. the drop is same for both pipes. because potential drop=flow of water*resistance offered by the pipe resistance and flow of water are inversely proportional. if cross section is more flow will be more and resistance will beless. and vice versa. hence the drop which is product of water and resistanceoffered by the pipe is equal for both the pipes.
