Question

I need help in arranging the halides in order of reactivityunder two sets of conditions. The halides are: n-butyl chloride,sec-butyl chloride, t-butyl chloride, n-butyl bromide, allylchloride, and chlorobenzene. Condition number 1 is each halide mixed with AgNO3 inethanol. Condition number 2 is each halide mixed with NaI inacetone.

Explanation / Answer

Thereaction of halides with AgNO3 in ethanol is anSN1 substitution where as the reactionof alkyl halides with NaI in acetone is an SN2substituion . SN1 substitution involoves thecarbonium ion intermediate so that the order of reactivitydepends on the stability of the carbonium ion.      condition 1     The order of reactivity of alkylhalides is            Allyl chloride > t-butyl bromide > t-butylchloride > secondary butyl bromide > secondary butyl chloride> n-butyl bromide > n-butyl chloride > benzyl chloride .      condition 2       The order of reactivity ofalkyl halides is       allylchloride  > n-butyl bromide   >  n-butyl chloride>   secondary butyl bromide > secondary butylchloride > tertiary butyl bromide > tertiary butylchloride > chloro benzene.
