Question

I'm not sure what he means by "the diploid number of chromosomes" from left to right I have 6, 12, and 6 chromosomes and the models from left to right are undergoing meiosis anaphase 1, mitosis anaphase, and meiosis anaphase 2. assuming a full set of chromosomes is 12, I'm assuming that the number of chromosomes in a diploid organism would be 12. Thanks for the help

Concept Check The following cells at various stages of mitosis and meiosis come from the same rare species of plant. What is the diploid number of chromosomes in this plant? Name each stage shown.

Explanation / Answer

The diploid number of chromosome of this plant is 6. Because according to you and me also the stage shown middle in the figure is Mitosis anaphase . We know that in mitosis cell division each offspring/daughter cell have same number of chromosome like mother cell. So it is clear that each cell having 6 no of chromosomes so mother cell also had 6 no of chromosomes. So it is mitosis anaphase .

On the left figure the chromosome number getting half (3 in number) in comparison to mother cell chromosome Number (6 in number). You can also sea that the chromosomes have sister chromatids. So It is the feature of the meiosis anaphase 1

In the right figure no sister chromatids are there and chromosome number is same like meiosis anaphase 1. It is the feature of meiosis anaphase 2.
