Question

Chapter 24, Problem 003 Two metal spheres, each of radlus 2.4 cm, have a center-to-center separation of 2.5 m. Sphere 1 has a charge of +1.2 x 10 C: sphere 2 has a charge of -2.8 x 10-8 C. Assume that the separation is large enough for us to assume that the charge on each sphere is unitormly distributed (the spheres do not affect each other). with V-0 at infinity, caloulate in volts (a) the potential at the point haltway between their centers and the potential on the surface of (b) sphere 1 and (c) sphere 2 (a) Numben (b) Number (c) Number Units Units unecs

Explanation / Answer

a) Q1 = 1.2 * 10-8 C, Q2 = -2.8 * 10-8 C

r1 = r2 = 0.024 m, r = 2.5 / 2 = 1.25 m

V1 = K Q1 / r = (9 * 109 * 1.2 * 10-8 ) / (1.25) = 86.4 V

V2= K Q2 / r = (9 * 109 * -2.8 * 10-8 ) / (1.25) = -201.6 V

Net potential = 86.4 - 201.6 = -115.2 V

b) V1 = K Q1 / r1

= (9 * 109 * 1.2 * 10-8 ) / (0.024)

= 4500 V

c) V2 = K Q2 / r2

= (9 * 109 * -2.8 * 10-8 ) / (0.024)

= -10,500 V
