Question
An electron is accelerated by a 7.4 kV potential difference. The charge on an electron is 1.60218 times 10-19 C and its mass is 9.10939 times 10-31 kg. How strong a magnetic field must be experienced by the electron if it's path is a circle of radius 5.1 cm? Answer in units of T 013 10.0 points A cosmic=ray proton in interstellar space has an energy of 13 MeV and executes a circular orbit with a 6.4 times 1010 m radius( similar to that of Mercury's orbit around the Sun). The charge on a proton is 1.602 times 10-19 C. what is the magnetic field in that region of space? Answer in units of TExplanation / Answer
centripetal force = magnetic force
mv^2/r = qvB
B = mv/qr
velcotcity v = sqrt(2eV/m)
v = sqrt(2*1.6*10^-19*7400/9.11*10^-31)
V= 5.1 *10^7 m/s
so now B = 9.11*10^-31 * 5.1*10^7/(1.6*10^-19 * 0.051)
B = 5.69 *10^-3 T
b. v^2 = 13*10^-13*2*1.6/1.6*10^-27
v = 5 *10^ 7 m/s
B = 1.67*10^-27 *5 *10^7 /(1.6*10^-19 * 6.4*10^10)
B = 8.15 *10^-12 T
