Question
A 5-KW DC generator is driven by a fixed pitch-angle wind turbine. The generator delivers its rated output at a rated wind speed of 12 m/sec. The generator is connected to a large 120V battery bank. The generator is driven at driven wind speed, delivering its rated output
A) calculate the generator output current, I
B) The wind speed was reduced to 8 m/sec; the generator efficiency stayed the same but the aerodynamic coefficient became 80% of what it was. Calculate the power output of the generator. The battery voltage stays constant at 120V.
Explanation / Answer
A) output current = rated power / voltage = 5000 watts÷120volts =41.66 amperes
B) now wind speed reduced to 8m/s from 12m/s. i.e., 2/3rd of initial speed.
Power out put varies as cube of speed.
So now power output reduces to (2/3)^3 of original value.
i.e. (8/27)*5000 watts = 1481.48watts
But aerodynamic coefficient became 80% of what it was.
So power output hence becomes 1481.48*0.8 = 1185.185 watts
