Question
What mass of oxygen is needed to react with 7.25 gal of methanol according to the balanced equation below? (1.00 gal = 3.79 L, and the density of methanol is 0.793 g/mL.)2 CH3OH(l) + 3 O2(g) 2 CO2(g) + 4 H2O(g)
If appropriate, express your answer in scientific notion. What mass of oxygen is needed to react with 7.25 gal of methanol according to the balanced equation below? (1.00 gal = 3.79 L, and the density of methanol is 0.793 g/mL.)
2 CH3OH(l) + 3 O2(g) 2 CO2(g) + 4 H2O(g)
If appropriate, express your answer in scientific notion.
Explanation / Answer
1.00 gal = 3.79 L so
7.25 gal = 27.5 L of methanol
27.5 L = 27500 mL
density = mass / volume
0.793 g/mL = mass / 27500 mL
mass of methanol = 21808 g
number of moles of methanol = 21808 / 32.04 g/mol = 681 mol
from the balanced equation we can say that
2 mole of methanol requires 3 mole of O2 so
681 mole of methanol will require
= 681 mole of methanol *( 3 mole of O2 / 2 mole of methanol )
= 1022 mole of O2
mass of 1 mole of O2 = 32.0 g
so the mass of 1022 mole of O2 = 32704 g
Therefore, the mass of O2 produced would be 32704 g
