Or, all of these phases would be visible at the sametime(indicate with check mark) Carefully explain your reasoning for ranking thisway:

Explanation / Answer

Beginning with waning gibbous phase:

1. D. (Wanning Gibbous) 2. B (Third Quarter) 3. E (Waning Crescent) 4. A (Waxing Crescent) 5. C (First Quarter)

When the sun, moon & the earth align in the same line i.e 0 degrees a new moon is produced which is not illuminated. As soon as the position of moon starts shifting & it comes at around 45 degrees angle with the sun (A) (Waxing Crescent) stage comes. Afterwards as the angle of the moon further increases & comes to 90 degrees it is said to be First quarter (C). Then a stage comes at 180 degrees from the Sun, the Moon is fully illuminated (a full moon). After this the size of the moon starts decreasing and when the moon is between 180 to 270 degrees it is said to be Waning Gibbous (D). And then the moon enters the third quarter (B) at 270 degrees and finally again it is going to be non-illuminated before that a stage comes between 270 & 360 degrees called Waning Crescent (E).
