Question
What is the plate tectonic setting during a) the Taconic Orogeny, b) the Acadian Orogeny, c) the Alleghenian Orogeny, d) the Antler Orogeny, e) the Sevier Orogeny, f) the Laramide Orogeny, f) the Basin and Range extension, g) the development of the Himalayan Orogen, h) the formation of the Snake River Plane, i) the Grenville Orogeny, j) the development of the Newark-Gettysburg basin across NJ-Southeast PA, k) the development of the Pioneer Core Complex, l) the formation of the San Andreas Fault.
For each orogeny, know
- The timing of the event (in millions of years and period/epochs)?
- What plate(s) were involved? If convergent, what was colliding?
- What are the major structural patterns/styles associated with each event?
- What kinds of sedimentary basins are associated with each event and what controls accommodation creation in those basins?
- What were the major trends in eustatic sea level and climate during each event?
Explanation / Answer
1. Taconic orogeny is resulted from collisions od series of volcanic island arcs and microterrains with the eastern flank of ancestral north america.
2. Acadian orogeny- begun in moddle devonian. Active approx. 50million yrs. It involves collisions of series of avalonian continental fragments with the lauresian continent.
3. Alleghenian oregony- caused when africa collided with north america. Immense region involved in continental collision, the vast temporal length of orogeny and the thickness of the pile of sediments and igneous rocks. When the continents collieded, rock material trapped in between was crushed and forced upward.
4. Antler orogeny- metamorphism and granatic intrusives are not linked with this one. Its limits are unknown. Was an enigmatic tectonic event, plate motion along the western margin of the north american continent in late devonian is stated as cause for this. This orogeny remained uncertained without proper analysis.
