Vitamin A is an important fat-soluble organic molecule which is mainly responsible for good vision and healthy teeth, skeletal tissues and skin. It however, can’t be synthesized in human body and has to supplemented by daily dietary intake in small quantities.

However, the digestion and absorption of Vitamin A is very typical. The molecule is digested in the duodenum by hydrolysis via pancreatic triglyceride lipase and phospholipase B. However, this doesnot occur unless the molecule has been solubilised in fat, which have then been worked upon by bile salts. Thus, bile salts are essential for digestion of Vitamin A.

After the enzymatic action, the molecules are micellized in the intestinal lumen. These Vitamin A micelles are then absorped by the duodenal mucosal cells.

Co-enzymes are non-protein, organic compounds which attach themselves to enzyme to catalyse a reaction. Vitamin A serves very important functions in the body, however, it doesnot act as a co-enzyme.
