Consider a project involving the use of one main resource. The project is to take place over a ten-week period, and two different schedules are being considered for implementation. The resource usages over time for each of the two schedules are shown below.
*NOTE: when multiple weeks are combined, the resource usage is constant at the listed “Units of Resource Usage” number. (ie: For Schedule 1 - 7 units usage in week 2, and 7 units again in week 3)

Which of the two schedules would be preferred in terms of leveling the resource usage? Why? (Support your answer.)

Explanation / Answer
As per my experience i would go for the first schedule. Reasons for this are:
1) In a project, the starting weeks are for major logic thinking and initiation part. In schedule 1, the first week is done by 4 resources, which is a good number to start with the logic thinking part and choosing the correct way to implementation. Many people would say that there should have been more resources in the first week to think of different ways to implement, but i would say that, it will only cause more of a messy situation instead of a productive output.
2) The resources in the 2nd and 3rd weeks are 7, which is good because now the path has been set and there is requirement of building the things, more number of people results in more number of progressive checkpoints in limited time, which helps the team to stay somewhat ahead/with the schedule.
3) By the 7th week the number of resources have been high, this will ensure that there is a distribution of work properly and this will help the team to complete the development in time.
4) Week 8 is given valid number of resources because , this will probably be the UAT phase and the business/client will be testing things, so just to be on calls and following up with the business, two resources are more than enough.
5) Now the last two weeks will be fixing the misses/issues that came out from the business side after UAT(User acceptance testing), so there is no need of many resource for eg 9 in schedule 2, but 6 resources can easily fix the issues and prepare for the release.
