Question

What is the function (purpose) of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)?

How does the NFPA rate benzene for health hazards and flammability?

What are the two physical hazards of benzene?

Describe the health effects of short term exposure to benzene inhalation?

Describe the health effects of long term exposure to benzene inhalation?

If a pool of benzene was on fire what media would you use to extinguish it?

(True or flase) Benzene is a carcinogen?

What is a carcinogen?

What are the lower and upper flammability limits of benzene?

Explain what those limits mean?

Explanation / Answer

The purpose of the National Fire Protection Association is to eliminate death, injury, property and economic loss due to fire, electrical and related hazards with information, knowledge and passion. It delivers information and knowledge through more than 300 consensus codes and standards, research, training, education, outreach and advocacy.

Based on NFPA,benzene is rated 2 i.e moderate hazard for health hazards and rated 3 i.e serious hazard or high hazard for flammability.

Two physical hazards of benzene are:

Short term exposure to benzene inhalation may cause drowsiness, diziness, headache, skin irritation and unconsciousness.

Long term exposure to benzene inhalation may cause reduced number of red blood cells and aplastic anemia, reproductive disorders, lukemia etc.

To estinguish benzene fire the media that can be used are carbon dioxide, water spray or fog

It is true that benzene is a carcinogen

Carcinogen is a substance capable of causing cancer in living cells.

The lower and upper flammability limits of benzene are 1.35% and 6.35% respectively.

Lower flammability limit means the lowest percentage of gas or vapor in air capable of producing a flash of fire in presense of an ignition source.Upper flammability limit means the highest percentage of vapor in air capable of producing a flash of fire in presence of an ignition source.
