Question

Application of Principles (Type the answers to these questions into your spreadsheet.) I. When the concentration of chemical A is 2.0 M, the rate of the reaction is 2.4×10-4 M/s. If the concentration of chemical A is changed to 4.0 M, the rate of the reaction increases to 1 .9×10% M/s. What is the order of reaction for chemical A? 2. The common bacteria e. coli reproduces at a rate of doubling the number in every hour (at room temperature). Is the growth of e. coli 0, 1, or 2 order'? 3. At a pencil making factory, a new pencil is produced every 5 minutes. Is this pencil production process 0, 1, or 2 order. 4. The rate of the reaction 2 H2+ O2 2 H2O is equal to k[H2]2[H201 under certain conditions. What is the order of the rate equation? Relevant Problems for Chemical Principles, Ian S. Butler, Arthur E. Grosser (W. A. Benjamin Publishers, Inc., 1971), Problem 19-2 5. The gas reaction CC,CHO + NO CHCls+ CO + NO has a rate equal to k[CCl3CHO]INO]. If concentrations are expressed in moles per liter, what are the units of the rate constant, k? Relevant Problems for Chemical Principles, Ian S. Butler, Arthur E. Grosser (W. A. Benjamin Publishers, Inc., 1971), Problem 19-3

Explanation / Answer

1) Given that, when concentration of A i.e.- [A]1 = 2 M, (Rate)1 = 2.4 x 10-4 M/S ------------------- (1)

when concentration of A i.e.- [A]2 = 4 M, (Rate)2 = 1.9 x 10-3 M/S --------------------- (2)

Let the rate of the rate law is given by, rate = k [A]m

from 1 and 2 we have

2.4 x 10-4 M/S = k (2)m ------------------------- (3)

1.9 x 10-3M/S = k(4)m ----------------------------(4)

eqn (4) / eqn (3), we have,

(1.9 x 10-3M/S / ( 2.4 x 10-4 M/S) = (4 / 2)m

or, 8 = 2 m or . 23 = 2 m

or, m = 3

thus, the reaction is 3rd order reaction.
