Question
Calculate the mass of butane needed to produce 47.4 of carbon dioxide.Explanation / Answer
Calculate the mass of butane needed to produce 45.1 of carbon dioxide? Calculate the mass of butane needed to produce 45.1 of carbon dioxide ? i suppose its 45.1 g of CO2 .. butane is C4H10 ....and it reacts with oxygen (combustion reaction ) to produce carbon dioxide and water according to the reaction ... 2C4H10 + 13O2 -------> 8CO2 + 10H2O now molecular mass of CO2 = 12 + 16 X 2 = 44 g/mole so number of moles of CO2 = 45.1/44 = 1.025 from the balanced chemical equation we can say that 8 moles of CO2 is given by 2 moles of C4H10.. so 1 mole of CO2 will be given by 2/8 moles of C4H10 so 1.025 mole of CO2 will be given by 2/8 X 1.025 = 0.256 moles of C4H10.. molecular mass of C4H10 = 12 X 4 + 10 X 1 = 58 g/mole so 0.256 mole of C4H10 weighs = 0.256 X 58 = 14.848 g
