Explanation / Answer

1. Explain how the skin serves a vital function in maintaining homeostasis.

SKIN performs multiple functions that help to maintain homeostasis of the body. These functions are:

A. Temperature regulation as sweat gland of skin releases sweat. Evaporation of sweat from skin gives a cooling effect and lowers the temperature of the body

B. vitamin synthesis: skin plays a very important role to maintain quantity of Vitamin D as required by body. It is synthesized by skin in presence of sunlight.

C. Excretion: skin also helps in removal of extra fatty acids and other waste from body through oil glands and removes waste from body.

D. Skin also regulates temperature by vasoconstriction and vasodilation of blood vessels in dermis.

2.Describe the structure of the layers of the skin including the types of tissues in each layer.

Different layers in skin are:

A. Epidermis: it is outermost layer of the skin that consists of multilayered/ stratified squamous epithelium. It's outermost layer consists of keratinised cells.

B. Dermis; This is second to outermost layer and consists of glandular tissue that release sebum and sweat. It also has connective tissue that mainly acts as a connecting medium.it also consists of nervous tissue in form of nerve fibres and nerve endings.

C. Subcutaneous tissue: it consists of mainly adipose tissue that stores fat under the skin.

D. Muscle: consists of muscle.

Describe the epidermis layer of the skin including its layers, the dividing structure, keratinization, and melanin.

epidermis consists of squamous epithelium present in multiple layers.different layers of epidermis are:

4. Describe dermis layer of the skin

Dermis is layer between epidermis and subcutaneous tissue.

It is separated from epidermis through a basement membrane. Dermis consists of dense irregular connective tissue, collagen, yellow fibres, blood vessels and nerves fibres. This layer also consist of glands like sweat gland and sebaceous gland that release sweat and oil. This is the sensitive layer of the skin because of presence of nerve fibres.
