Question

What was the color of the red cabbage indicator in an acidic solution? What was the color of the red cabbage indicator in an alkaline solution? What was the color of the turmeric indicator in an acidic solution? What was the color of the turmeric indicator in an alkaline solution? Compare the response of each of the natural indicators with the strong acid (muriatic acid) and the strong base (Drano), to each indicator's response to the solution of baking soda. (For one of your solutions, show one example calculation each of how the pH is calculated from the -[H^+] and also how the [H^+] can be calculated from the experimental pH. )

Explanation / Answer

What was the color of red cabbage indicator in an acidic solution?

Ans: When used in strong acid solution the color indicator will be in red (pH 2). If it is mild acidic solution the color of the indicator will be purple (pH 4).

What was the color of red cabbage indicator in an alkaline solution?

Ans: When used in strong alkaline solution the color of the indicator will greeenish yellow (pH 13). If it is mild alkaline solution color of the indicator will be blue green (pH 9).

What was the color of turmeric indicator in an acidic solution?

Ans: Generally, Turmeric indicator is yellowsih in color. If we use a turmeric indicator in acidic solution it will be yellowish in color.

What was the color of turmeric indicator in an alkaline solution?

Ans: If we use a turmeric indicator in alkaline solution it becomes dark pink or red.

Response of Natural indicators

For Muriatic acid (HCl)

Red cabbage indicator will be reddish in color.

Turmeric indicator will become yellowish in color.

For Drano

Red cabbage indicator will be greenish yellow.

Turmeric indicator becomes dark pink or red.

For Baking soda

Red cabbage indicator will be blue green

Turmeric indicator becomes dark pink or red.

Calculations:

Calculation for pH [H+] and also how the [H+] can be calculated from experimental pH.

In order to calculate the pH of the solution u need to know the hydronium ion concentration. then pH can be calcuated by the expression pH = - log [H3O+].

Let us take an example of Muriatic acid. During our experiment the concentration of the muriatic acid is 0.1 M then by applying the above equation we get. In our example of muriatic acid during ionisation H+ and Cl- will occur in solution.

Since the HCl is 100% ionized in water hence 0.1 M HCl is equalend to 0.1M hydronium ion concetration.

pH = -log [0.1] = -(-1.0) = 1.0

pH = 1.0
